Snakes and Ladders
Snakes and Ladders is the classic children's race game but few people realise that it was originally a Victorian copy of an ancient Indian game based upon Hindu morality. The Indian game and the early Victorian versions of snakes and ladders had squares at the top of ladders designed with positive moral messages while the squares at the bottom of snakes showed examples of what can happen to those of bad virtue... These days snakes and ladders is more of a fun game for younger children! Of course you can buy cheap snakes and ladders boards in any old shop so we try to find versions of the game that are a bit special or unusual.
